| A normal gene ... | ||||
|
... consists of a string of 'letters' in which is written the genetic code. In this example a gene on a DNA molecule is located and transcribed into mRNA. The ribosomes and the initiating tRNA molecule find the correct place to begin. This is the start signal and consists of the codon AUG. Note: for the purposes of demonstration, three letter words have been substituted for real codons in this example. The real genetic code only uses four letters on the mRNA molecule; A, U, G, and C. The genetic code is written in groups of three letters (the codons) which are read sequentially until the stop signal is reached. Each codon is translated into a single amino acid in the final polypeptide chain.
