Fluid membranes
The double lipid layer is not the only component of the plasma membrane. Proteins 'float' in the sea of lipid. Some lie on the surface, some project into the double lipid layer, and others penetrate from one side to the other. Carbohydrate molecules may be attached either to the protein or to the phospholipids.
