Converging Lens
A single convex lens converges (brings together) parallel rays of light at the focal point of the lens. This light is so concentrated that the energy is contains can set dry materials alight.
Magnification
If an object (such as this cell) is brought inside the focal length of the lens, the rays of light leaving that object are sent on a divergent path (they spread out). An observer on the other side of the lens sees an image which is both magnified and the right way up.
