Brooklyn College Outcomes Assessment Plan

Brooklyn College Outcomes Assessment Plan Executive Summary

The Brooklyn College Outcomes Assessment Plan was developed in Fall 2001 in response to recommendations made by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Universities. The plan was written by the College’s Outcomes Assessment Plan Committee which represented all major areas of the institution. Outcomes assessment is a process of self reflection based on the College’s mission and the goals of its various departments and offices. The purpose of assessment is to use the information for improvement. The plan is designed to be an interactive study of its institution wide goals and effectiveness focusing on courses, programs, and services at the institutional, program, and course levels. It is to be an instrument for improvement not evaluation. All areas at the college will participate in a phased-in approach that utilizes a feedback to assure that areas currently implementing outcomes assessment will assist those departments who are just starting the process. Finally, the plan is structured so assessment activities are integrated into existing activities rather than creating new processes.

The principles of the plan are:

The plan identifies five categories for assessment, including three that correspond with the major goals set forth in the College’s Strategic Plan. Subcommittees have been created to guide implementation of the plan.

Below are the College's five areas of Outcomes Assessment:

  1. Academic Quality: Areas that will be assessed include: General Education, Learning in the Major
  2. Student Oriented Campus
  3. Model Citizenship in the Borough of Brooklyn
  4. General Student Outcomes
