Big Improvements:Projects List

Projects funded by the City and State

Performing Arts Center

Phase: Pre-Programming

The Performing Arts Center is a multi-phase project that is expected to be a 66,000 sf in-fill addition located between Whitman and Gershwin.  It is anticipated that it will contain a black box theater, classrooms and support space for the performing arts programs.   Part of this project will be to evaluate existing spaces in Whitman and Gershwin, and design a unified and coordinated three-building complex that will support state-of-the-art teaching facility.  This project was recommended in the 1995 Master Plan

Roosevelt Hall Renovation – Science Complex

Phase:  Programming

The Roosevelt Hall Science Complex is a multi-phased project that is expected to renovate Roosevelt Hall and Extension, which will be left almost vacant after Physical Education Sciences and Recreation move to the new West Quad.  The Programming Phase will study and then make recommendations for the types of science-related spaces needed to create a modern, relevant science education and research facility for Brooklyn College.   This project was recommended in the 1995 Master Plan.

New West Quad Building

Phase: Construction

The new West Quad building is a four story, 140,000 sf building that will house all the Physical Education Sciences and Recreation and student services departments such as the Registrar, Bursar, Admissions, Financial Aid and Scholarships.  These departments will share a central student service area call the Oasis that will be located in the main lobby.  The main lobby will also have a small café and views into the competition gym and swimming pool.  The building is expected to open in late 2008.

SUBO Conference Center Upgrade

Phase:  Pre-Construction

The conference center upgrade will include the gut rehabilitation of the sixth floor and penthouse level of SUBO.  In addition to completely new finishes for the floors, the sixth floor will have movable partitions to allow the space to be divided and more flexible.  Both floors will have state-of-the-art conference and presentation technologies.

James Roof Replacement

Phase:  Design

James roof is no longer providing the intended protection against the elements.  Rooms on the fifth floor, immediately under the roof and even lower floors are getting wet.  The entire roof will be replaced, and parapets and other associated areas will be repaired to make the building water-tight.  In addition, the architects will design a platform for the Astronomy Club for night-time star gazing and study.

Rehabilitation of the Whitman stage floor and Rigging

Phase:  Bidding and Pre-construction

The entire renovation of Whitman Theater was not financially possible.  The first phase of the renovation addressed the replacement of all the interiors of the main hall and mezzanine, which was done after the roof was replaced.   This phase will replace the stage floor and repair and upgrade the rigging.

Environmental Assessment Core Center

Phase:  Design

The Geology department is expanding its academic program to include molecular assessment of materials and compounds and their possible impact on the environment.  The center will have two purposes, educating students and providing testing services of environmental contaminants for local businesses.  The Center will be located on the 5th floor in Ingersoll.

Speech & Hearing and the School of Education Teaching Lab

Phase:  Bidding and Pre-Construction

This project combines two smaller renovations.  Speech and Hearing will have a new electronic evaluation and teaching system installed as well as minor upgrades to spaces.  Room 4309 Ingersoll will be renovated into a state-of-the-art teaching laboratory for the School of Education.

Cafeteria Renovation

Phase:  Design and Construction

The cafeteria is undergoing a phased design and construction effort to improve one of the campus’ most heavily used spaces.  An architect was hired to do a unified design that would be implemented over time, as funds become available.  To date, the cafeteria has been painted and received new table and chairs.  The next phase will create smaller more congenial gathering areas within the large space.

Library and Library Café leak study

Phase:  Investigation

Leaks have developed on the roofs of these two buildings.  An architectural firm has been hired to investigate the leaks, and will prepare a remediation report.

Campus-wide Fire Alarm and Security Upgrade

Phase: Bid Documents

The existing fire alarm and security systems will be upgraded and integrated into one centralized system.  The new control room will be located from Whitehead to Ingersoll in a space adjacent to Security.  This project will greatly increase the ability of Security to monitor and provide improved services to the campus.

Façade Repair for SUBO, Roosevelt Extension and Ingersoll Extension

Phase:  Bidding and Pre-construction

The City of New York requires that the exterior of all high rise buildings be inspected every 5 years, under Local Law 11.   The inspection cycle for SUBO, Ingersoll Extension and Roosevelt Extension came up and the buildings were inspected.  Minor non-hazardous situations were identified and architects have completed bid documents to make the required repairs.

Site Drainage Repair at Whitehead and Library

Phase:   Bidding and Pre-construction

Several years ago, flooding began in the seating area on the south side of Whitehead and in the basement of the Library.  During periods of heavy rain the water collected outside of Whitehead and flooded the basement.  In the Library the water would back up into the basement.  Engineers were hired and found the obstructions which will be repaired in this project.

Campus-wide CUNY initiated Energy Conservation Project

Phase:  Investigation and Bid Documents

CUNY along with NYPA, (New York Power Authority) have initiated a uiversity wide evaluation of existing heating systems with the intent of replacing machinery, equipment and parts that will save energy to pay for the repairs in about 8 years.   After the payback period, substantial savings for energy will be realized at Brooklyn College and other campuses throughout the University system.

Chiller Plant Free-Cooling Upgrade

Phase: Construction Close-out

The free cooling upgrade modified the equipment to make use of cooler temperatures to chill the water distributed for air conditioning through out the campus.  Cooling is needed year round for rooms such as computer rooms and laboratories.

Roosevelt Hall Steam Tunnel Repair Study

Phase:  Investigation

This was a study to determine why some of the supports for the steam lines were moving.  The report will identify possible problems and indicate solution options, and include cost estimates for making the repairs.

Repair of Hillel Gate Entrance

Phase:  Bidding and Pre-construction

This project will repair the sidewalks and entrance concrete and the wrought iron fence around the Hillel entrance.

Repair of Library Café Plaza and Landscaping

Phase:  Bidding and Pre-construction

The project will repair the tile and concrete plaza in front of the Library Café.  The work will include new landscaping materials in the plaza and around the sidewalk leading to the bicycle rack entrance.

Oil Spill Remediation

Phase:  Remediation

During the construction of the Chiller Plant, it was discovered that one of the very old fuel oil tanks had leaked.  Investigations were done and the extent of the leak and the method to remove the oil from the ground were established.  The remediation is on-going and will continue for several years.  It should be noted that the oil is very heavy and has not seeped very far from the tank.  There is no hazardous exposure to the campus community and remediation is following all EPA and other regulatory guidelines.

DASNY Certificate of Occupancy Program

Phase:  Not Applicable

DASNY as the owner of Brooklyn College buildings has initiated a program whereby all buildings, regardless of age, will eventually get a Certificate of Occupancy.  Many of the older buildings on campus were built under earlier Buildings Department regulations and DASNY is systematically collecting pertinent data and making selected repairs and upgrades to eventually allow all buildings to have Certificates of Occupancy
