Big Improvements

Capital Projects Funded by the State/City

Brooklyn College has a big beautiful campus, but its facilities date from the 1930's, 1960's, and 1970's and they could use some serious upgrades.  The college has a master plan done in 1995, which envisions a continual revitalization of the campus infrastructure to meet emerging needs with effective and attractive facilities.  The Facilities Planning Office works closely with CUNY and the NYS Dormitory Authority (our landlord), as well as with campus planning groups to prioritize needed improvements and to seek funding from CUNY for those projects.  These projects, like the new Library and the emerging West Quad project, can take years to be funded and years more to build. Just as in the private sector, these projects require the services of designers, architects, contractors, and builders.  The projects that fall within this category are typically funded by either NYC or NYS.

City-funded projects are generally smaller in scope and cost, and respond to localized needs, such as the Library Café, the renovation of the Whitman Hall theater and roof replacement, and the renovations in the Speech & Hearing offices and the Science Education lab in Ingersoll.

State-funded projects are usually larger in scope and follow a CUNY-commissioned Master Plan, created in 1995. The Dormitory Authority of New York (DASNY) provides active oversight for these projects.  Examples of large-scale state-funded projects are the New Library and the West Quad project.  Currently, the college is working with CUNY on the earliest stages of renovating Roosevelt Hall to become a science building, and the building of a performing arts center in the space between Whitman and Gershwin Halls. This project will be funded by a combination of funds from the City, State and major alumni donations.

The State also funds large-scale infrastructure projects such as the Campus-Wide Security and Fire Alarm Upgrade and the Local Law 11 projects that will repair the exteriors of SUBO and Roosevelt and Ingersoll Extensions.

You can take a look at these projects and others that are described here. The Facilities Web site will be updated periodically to reflect the status of the projects as they move forward.
