What is the Civil Service?
The New York State Legislature, in establishing The City University of New
York as a municipal employer, expressly mandated that the University function
as a unified system for the classified service. Under Section 20 of the Civil
Service Law of New York, which dates back to 1909, rules and regulations have
been developed to provide for the recruitment, examination, selection, assignment,
pay, training, development, evaluation, reward, and separation of employees
in the classified service.
Benefits of Civil Service
- Job Security - upon being appointed from the civil service list and completing
1 year probation.
- Health Benefits - greatly enhanced under the umbrella of the State of New
York, similar to the Teachers Union and Fire Department.
- Union Benefits - prescription card, dental, eye reimbursement, legal services.
- Tuition Waivers - prerequisite service requirements.
- Longevity and Merit Increases - applicable to certain titles.
