PROVOST'S INITIATIVE for RESEARCH and SCHOLARSHIP (PIERS)
We are pleased to announce the launch of the Spring '07 semester's PIERS program. The PIERS program is now in its third round and activities for the current cohort are well underway. Participants are working with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs in small groups to develop sound proposals for submission later this year.
Through PIERS, we aim to stimulate research and scholarly activity on campus, increase faculty mentoring of each other, create peer support groups and enhance opportunities for inter-disciplinary projects, as well as to enlarge our base of external awards. If accepted into the PIERS program you will receive one three-credit course release to allow you the time to focus on writing a successful proposal and to take part in the required activities.
Program eligibility and guidelines:
- Only faculty with no current full overhead awards will be considered.
- All full-time faculty in any department who are prepared to write a research or institutional* proposal to any sponsor whose policy is to provide full overhead. (The requirement for full overhead grants remains necessary to generate funds so that we may expand the PIERS program even more widely.)
- Chair signature is required prior to submission of your application. Chair approval is required before the request goes forward to the internal review committee. The Chair's signature on the application represents their commitment to honor the release time granted to faculty in this program. The granted release time is to be used during the semester you are a PIERS participant. Release time may not be banked for future use.
- By submitting a PIERS application you acknowledge that you are required to write and submit a proposal to the most appropriate agency for a specific deadline. Applications to rewrite a declined application will also be considered.
- All PIERS participants must identify a Senior Faculty/Mentor who agrees to review a minimum of two drafts. Mentors can be on or off campus.
- PIERS participants are required to make an informal presentation on their progress mid-semester to the Science Research Council. (Participants will be notified of the date.)
- Each selected faculty member will be required to draft a work plan with a timeline, attend proposal writing workshops led by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) and to join and meet regularly with one of the PIERS peer groups or faculty mentors that will support the development of your proposal.
*An institutional grant proposal is one that addresses increasing student engagement and enrollment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, teacher training in the STEM areas and opportunities to enhance diversity in STEM subjects. It is likely that these grants are ones funded by the NSF. If contemplating an application in this category, faculty should check with Barbara Naso in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs prior to preparing the submission to clarify eligibility.
Complete applications must include:
New Proposal Application (3 credits reassigned time)
- submit approximately a one to three page pre-proposal that contains either the primary research to be conducted or a description of the program design for the STEM proposal
- identify the likely funding agencies and program within those agencies where the proposal may be submitted
- proof of substantive contact with agency program staff (provide comments and their feedback)
- submit names of 2-3 colleagues and your mentor who have agreed to work with you through to submission
- submit timeline and targeted agency's deadlines
Proposal Resubmission Application (3 hours of reassigned time)
- submit reviewers' comments
- submit an outline of how comments and deficiencies will be addressed
- submit names of 2-3 colleagues/mentors who have agreed to work with you through to submission
- submit timeline and targeted agency's deadlines
Please send the completed application to Barbara Naso, Director, Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at bnaso@brooklyn.cuny.edu no later than November 10, 2006.
Please either scan or fax the cover letter with original signatures, hard copy of the signed cover page may follow within three business days.
