I. INTRODUCTION

Brooklyn College, a CUNY technology leader in the 20th century, continues to set and maintain the highest technology standards as the 21st century opens. We are making tremendous progress in administrative and instructional technology, with a campus that is substantially networked and technology that has continuous, ever expanding impact on our classrooms. Virtually all faculty and staff have computers. The campus network maintains a high-speed Internet connection, is connected to the CUNY mainframe and provides a wealth of resources. Students have access to a great number of sophisticated Internet-attached lab facilities, some of which have the most extensive operating hours in CUNY.

The Faculty Guide to BC Technology was developed to assist faculty in the use of available campus technology. It describes current systems, services and facilities and clarifies the roles of support teams. The Guide provides detailed lists of resources and specificies the contact(s) for those resources. Also included are User Guides for voice mail and e-mail, as well as sample forms and applications.

The Faculty Guide to BC Technology highlights some of the short- and long-term technology plans for Brooklyn College. These plans indicate the substantial investment that has been made in the improvement of our technology infrastructure and support services for the entire campus community. For example, the newly renovated and expanded Library is a state-of-the art facility that combines research and technology in a beautiful setting designed to maximize efficiency and comfort. The installation of campus-wide backbone cabling will allow the campus to migrate to the hyperfast Ethernet. Our two large student computer labs will merge when they move to the Field Building and become a substantial new facility, providing a range of technology to suit every student’s needs.

To fulfill its educational mandate, Brooklyn College explores and assesses every innovation in technology for its potential in the learning arena. The Faculty Guide to BC Technology provides updated information about the many resources developed for you.
