Spotlight on StaffOn the morning of January 2, 1985, in a cleared area of his office at 59th and Lexington in Manhattan, Jim Kozack was delivered a new IBM/XT computer. His supervisor at The Lighthouse, (a provider agency for people with visual impairments) asked, "Can you handle it?" Jim gave the nod yes, and thus started a meaningful career enabling people to become more independent through assistive technology.
In late September 1998 during the first week at his new job specializing in computer access for students with disabilities at Brooklyn College, Jim ran into one of his former students as they both crossed Flatbush Avenue. He smiled.
As Disability Support Specialist at ITS Mr. Kozack’s first duty is to insure that various pieces of technical equipment at the college are both accessible and up-to-date for all students. His first goal is focusing on the computers in the Atrium Lab, The Maimie and Frank Goldstein Research Center of the Services for Students with Disabilities Program, and the Gideonse Library. These three locations are already equipped with computer devices, programs and Internet capabilities to assist students with disabilities.
-continued on page 2We are proud to announce that the City University of New York is begining to install SALI at other CUNY campuses. SALI (SIMS Access LAN Interface) is a LAN client-server application developed by ITS to provide access to SIMS data via the college network. Among its many features, SALI provides access to the following:
The SALI program was designed by Alex Rotkop to empower end-users to produce many common SIMS outputs. An important aspect of the SALI program lies in its ability to permit each campus to customize the program to suit its own stipulations.
As Brooklyn College continues to enhance SALI’s capabilities the hope is to merge the schools into a unified system sometime over the next year. A SALI User Guide is now available that provides easy step-by-step user instructions.
