Academic Web Pages

I.T.S. has assumed responsibility for maintaining the structure of the Academic Web pages and providing access for faculty and academic departments. On request, web directory space and an access account will be allocated by ITS. The Academic Computer Center in the Library will continue to train and assist with web content.

Applications for a web directory and FTP account (see Jargon Watch next page) are available from the Academic Information and Technology -- Room 019 Library x4634. Submit the completed form to ITS. Your request will be verified and within two weeks you will receive a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) account to access and manage your web page. The FTP account enables you to copy or move your content onto the web directory from any internet-accessible computer. ITS can provide links to your page from the college’s academic main page. Once established, you will have full control over the page’s content and will be responsible for maintaining and updating your material.

To learn how to create a web page, or for assistance with web content, please contact the Academic Information and Technology located in room 019 Library x4634. Mr. Nick Irons and his staff provide training and assistance with web design and will be offering training seminars in this area.

The ITS Network Group will provide walk-in and telephone support for FTP related problems Monday through Thursdays, 10 am to 1 pm. The staff will answer questions about software, operational and technical aspects of web accounts. FTP training sessions will be held weekly at the Computer Center, 0607 Plaza. Call the Network Group at x5861 for reservations, or E-mail: NETGROUP@BROOKLYN.CUNY.EDU

JARGON WATCH

FTP -- File Transfer Protocol. FTP is the program for moving files from one computer to another. It is used to log-in on a remote computer, either as an authorized user, a guest or an anonymous user. FTP has a client program that interacts with an FTP server which stores and hosts the files. With the FTP client program, a user can download files from the FTP server or, if the user has an account on the server, upload files to a directory on the server. On the Internet, the term "server" has two meanings: 1) the computers, also known as nodes or hosts, that store and deliver files to other computers on the Net; and 2) the Web server software that enables the computer to interact with the user’s computers. As a key component of the client-server architecture of the Net, server software interacts with client software on individual user’s computers.
