After months of intensive development and preparation, BC achieved
a milestone of information technology with the debut of WebSIMS,
a grand and ambitious Internet program with which students easily
and quickly complete college-related tasks online. With WebSIMS
(WebStudent Information Management Systems) and any Internet-accessible
computer, students have already enjoyedregistering for the Summer
and Fall 2002 semesters, viewing and ordering transcripts, and filing
for graduation. They have also been paying tuition and checking their
billing and financial information. The propitious result: the tedious
task of phone registration, and the long lines that defeated the
sturdiest of shoes and spirits, are quickly being replaced by a
comfortable seat in front of a computer.
ITS worked closely with the offices of the Registrar and Bursar
to determine, plan and develop theveritable profusion of WebSIMS
requirements. Assistant Registrar Johana Rivera and Steve Austreich,
ITS Information Systems Coordinator & Project Manager, tirelessly
tested the program again and again for usability, bugs and glitches.
In a program of this scope, itisn't unusual to find problems, and
Austreich and Rivera solved them well before the first student clicked
Enter WebSIMS. Working with a tight deadline, they spent
countless hours in each and every link of WebSIMS and going through
hundreds of pages of documentation. Their perseverance paid off
when WebSIMS was officially launched in the last week of January.
Telephone Registration (IVR) will continue to be available to students.
With WebSIMS, however, students now have a truly accommodating way
to conveniently take care of the business of college.
