ITS-created programs that improve BCs administrative capabilities
can sometimes have amusing acronyms. SALI
and CALI, for example, sound like
the names of a friend, a sister or an aunt. Actually, theyre
two very useful tools.
SALI stands for SIMS* Access LAN Interface. Its a windows-based
program that provides extracts of SIMS information, and both faculty
and staff can use it to produce mailing labels and a wide variety
of reports. The beauty of SALI is that its an alternative
to the more complicated, mainframe SIMS program. Its extremely
user-friendly and fast, and you can select from many parameters
for reports. For example, you can produce a report indicating all
Asian students in their sophomore year, with a major in physics
and a GPA of 3.2 or higher. You can also e-mail students directly
from the program. SALI makes student and enrollment information
access easy and flexible. (To apply for a SALI account, contact
ITS, x 5861.)
CALI stands for CUPS* Access LAN Interface and is a database of
information about full- and part-time faculty and staff. The data
includes type of appointment, home address and phone number, educational
degrees, years employed at BC, etc. CALI is used by the Office of
Human Resources and certain BC executives to produce reports and
spreadsheets. Like SALI, CALI is far more user-friendly than its
mainframe progenitor. With over one hundred fields of information,
CALI is capable of reports that reflect every conceivable parameter.
