Cables Continue To Uncoil Around Campus

As you know, the Backbone Cabling Project is an ambitious, multimillion-dollar modernization plan in which new cable will be installed campus wide, to greatly increase the speed at which computer bytes travel. The project is well underway.

Phase I of the project is complete: our telephone operations have been converted to a PBX system. (See PBX: Three Little Letters Make Campus Life Easier)

Now that a cabling vendor has been selected, cable installation can begin. The Islip Special Assembly Corporation (ISAC) will start installing the cable in April and will complete the job in the fall. Cable will be placed in tunnels and wiring closets all over campus. When installation is completed, preparations will begin to install new, high-speed cable to every desk on campus, to bring high-speed networking and modern digital phones to faculty and staff.
