WebGrade Success! Were you On-line?Book

WebGrade's first semester of college-wide use was a huge success. Seventy-six percent of all grades were submitted through the new system!
This success had its roots in a strong partnership with the Registrar, a carefully planned campaign to encourage WebGrade use, and a series of well-attended WebGrade training sessions back in November. Irina Shor of ITS ran the sessions to familiarize faculty and department chairs with the on-line process. One-hundred-seventy-six members of faculty and staff attended the pre-grading sessions.
ITS would like to congratulate the Department of Educational Services, Film, Physics, and Television and Radio for 100% participation in WebGrade! Chemistry, Classics, and Physical education were close behind with only one member of each department lowering the totals.
During the grading period, faculty questions and concerns were quickly answered by Irina Shor and the Registrar staff. The Registrar herself frequently answered questions on weekends via e-mail!
Feedback from participating faculty has been extremely positive.

  • "The WebGrade system is one of the clearest systems I've dealt with at B.C."
    --Elisabeth Weis, Film
  • "I absolutely LOVE WebGrade!"
    --Ellen Tremper, English
Thanks to WebGrade, students could view their grades on-line the day after their instructor submitted them, department chairs could easily monitor faculty progress, and faculty could submit their grades from any web accessible location! (And 60% did from off campus!)
With such a successful first run, it's easy to see why WebGrade is the college's choice for bringing grade submission into the new millennium.

Spotlight On Staff: Kelly Drayer Pen
Kelly and Abigail out and about
Brooklyn College has a new Director of Telecommunications! Kelly Drayer was hired to provide an additional layer of experienced technical leadership to the college in this time of unprecedented growth in the telecom areas. As Director of Telecom, Kelly is committed to bringing Brooklyn College's voice communications into the twenty-first century.
Kelly began his career in telecommunications when he was a member of the US Marine Corps. Kelly loved the opportunity to learn new things and see new places that the Core provided. Beyond telecommunications, Kelly also learned to speak and read traditional Japanese while stationed in Japan.
After leaving the Marines, Kelly found his way to Bard College where he was also the Director of Telecommunications. While at Bard, Kelly worked tirelessly to improve their telecom department. He worked so hard in fact, that when he left to join us, he'd saved up ten weeks of vacation!
Kelly is eager to apply his work ethic to Brooklyn College's Telecommunications Department. His goals include consolidating
BC's wide spread phone company controlled systems into one PBX (private branch exchange) that will give BC dial-tone control. Also on the docket, is making sure digital voice mail is in place and fully functioning.
To make all this happen, Kelly has to get here each day, which involves a five-hour commute! So much travel is definitely tiring, and for Kelly, who doesn't drink coffee, the hours could be endless. Not to worry though, Kelly has cleverly substituted a coke and chocolate for his morning caffeine fix.
Kelly likes telecommunications because of the challenge of keeping up with the ever-changing technology. Also, since "Everyone needs a phone," he is pretty sure that someone will always need his skills.
Outside of work, Kelly is a dedicated husband and father. And, to fill up any time he doesn't spend working or with the family, Kelly keeps busy volunteering. As a coach for the American Youth Soccer Organization and a softball coach as well, Kelly makes sure kids get the opportunity to participate and have fun in sports.
Not stopping there, Kelly takes his volunteer spirit on the road. Each spring Kelly participates in the "Tour de Cure," a 100-mile bike race for Diabetes. He also participates in similar races for AIDS charities. So, when he hits you up for donations this spring, be glad it's not you who has to ride 100 miles and give gladly to help this go-getter help others.
Kelly is looking to move his family closer to BC in a few months. However, he'll still rely on his morning pick-up to make sure he has the energy to tackle whatever needs to be done to keep BC's Telecommunications Department in top form.
