Connecting to the College From Home!!

Did you know that you can dial directly into the college from your home computer? If you have a modem with dial up networking properly configured and are within the local calling area, ITS can show you how.
The remote access dial-in called "BC Intranet" allows access to BC e-mail and BC websites. You can also access your e-mail and other services via any third party Internet connection. Join nearly 200 of your peers in the faculty and administration who already use this facility.
If you'd like to learn more about this service or receive illustrated instructions, send e-mail to: netgroup@brooklyn.cuny.edu. (Please use "Dial-up Instructions" as your subject)

New Servers to Serve You

BC is increasingly dependant on its web infrastructure to deliver critical information, host courses, and allow access to a variety of campus-wide databases. To keep pace with the huge demand for access and to reduce the risk of system failure, ITS recently installed a new set of SUN web servers. The new servers are configured in a cluster to allow each server to fail-over to a second, third and even fourth backup system. A set of sophisticated redundant web-switches routes traffic to the various systems and can react almost immediately to a perceived system failure. The new platforms are substantially more powerful than the previous models and should support the explosive growth anticipated over the next 1-2 years.
ITS has also implemented new streaming media servers and expects to bring even more powerful media platforms on-line over the next year, including an extremely high-capacity digital media distribution system for the new Library.

Web Structure: Weaving a Path That's Easy to Follow

To organize the 75,000 pages of material on BC's web servers and facilitate efficient search indexing, BC's web content is arranged in a logical tree structure across several different hosts. It is important that content is published in the appropriate place in the directory structure. When you apply for space you will be asked to provide a description of your content so appropriate web space(s) can be assigned.
The following is a list of the various areas:
  • DEPTHOME.BROOKLYN.CUNY.EDU
Holds OFFICIAL departmental and program web pages.
  • USERHOME.BROOKLYN.CUNY.EDU
Holds INDIVIDUAL faculty web pages containing personal or professional information.
  • ACADEMIC.BROOKLYN.CUNY.EDU
    Holds COURSE related web pages.
  • STUDENTS.BROOKLYN.CUNY.EDU
Holds student organizations and clubs as authorized by Student Affairs.
Holds the college's general information pages.
For information about applying for web space, or general information about the categories above, contact ITS at webgroup@brooklyn.cuny.edu or 951-5861. You can also visit AIT at 301-4 Roosevelt or call 951-4634.
Faculty members can request two storage locations - one in ACADEMIC for their course related pages, and one in USERHOME for their personal pages.

Make sure the information you want to share is where people can find it!
