Faculty Computer Replacement Policy (Hardware)
September 2002

The Brooklyn College Strategic Plan, 2000-2005, makes technological innovation a top priority. The computer, with its associated software and peripheral components, has become a pivotal tool in the educational process.

With the current rate of change in software and hardware, every computer in the College needs to be upgraded or replaced on a periodic scheduled basis. This program, therefore, will be administered according to the following guidelines:

  • All faculty members who desire a computer should have desktop machine meeting minimum hardware and software specifications. This definition will evolve as does educational technology and will be determined by the Provost’s Technology Committee, in consultation with ITS;

  • The goal of the faculty computer replacement policy is to replace desktop computers as quickly as the budget permits;

  • New faculty will be provided with a desktop computer at the beginning of their first year;

  • Faculty members who want to update their computers before the end of the replacement cycle may submit requests and justifications to their chairs who will submit these requests to the Provost’s Technology Committee. A request for a mid-cycle upgrade may be met by upgrading the faculty member’s existing computer or replacing it. ITS will confer with faculty to determine the appropriate approach. When an upgrade is made, the replacement cycle will start over;

  • Regular computer replacements will be determined on the basis of the computer equipment inventory maintained by ITS. The Provost’s Technology Committee, after consideration of the budget and the number of upgrade requests, will establish the number of routine replacements. Departments that have not submitted inventory information may be excluded from the replacement cycle until the appropriate information is provided. ITS will notify faculty of the intent to upgrade or replace their computer in the coming year;

  • Faculty members who do not require or desire an upgrade must indicate their decision in writing to ITS. When the replacement is declined, the faculty member is returned to the queue for the following year;

  • Department chairs notify ITS when faculty retire or leave the College’s service. These computers will be reconditioned and reassigned according to needs determined by the College administration.
