Brooklyn College Office of Student Assistance and Referral

SAR assists students who are having difficulty gaining access or help from college services and programs for which they are eligible. SAR seeks to help and empower students by clarifying the process, informing students not only where to go, but how to approach the situation in a manner designed to obtain the fairest result possible.

SAR staff members:

  • provide students with information relevant to their situation (e.g., the process for appealing grades);
  • make referrals to both internal and external resources; and
  • when appropriate, personally contact academic programs and services on behalf of students.

SAR staff members, under the aegis of the Division of Student Affairs, also provide administrative oversight for selected student emergency loan and grant fund programs, such as the I. Mereese Ladson Emergency Hardship Loan, the Glaser Emergency Book Voucher Loan Fund (for international and graduate students), and the new Brooklyn College Carroll and Milton Petrie Student Emergency Endowment Fund.

For more information on SAR and its programs, contact us via email at studentsar@brooklyn.cuny.edu, or visit us at the Office of Student Affairs located in 2113 Boylan Hall, 718.951.5352. Day and evening appointments are available, Monday through Friday.

The Carroll and Milton Petrie Student Emergency Endowment Fund

The Carroll and Milton Petrie Student Emergency Endowment Fund, funded through a grant from the Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation, is a new financial resource that assists eligible Brooklyn College students in coping with an unexpected hardship. It allows students to continue their education at the college and empowers them to become responsible for their ongoing academic development. The grant’s primary goal is to provide financial support to the widest range of students, with an eye toward retention and graduation.

Generally, all matriculated graduate and undergraduate BC students who are in good academic standing, have obeyed all policies in regard to college conduct, and whose tuition is already paid are eligible to apply for the grant. The applications, along with supporting documentation, are reviewed by an emergency assistance committee composed of representatives from various student service offices (financial aid, enrollment services, scholarships and student affairs).

Examples of qualifying emergencies include (but are not limited to):

  • travel home for illness or death in the immediate family;
  • homelessness due to loss of housing, for student and dependent family members;
  • documented theft of books, and other essential academic belongings;
  • medical bills for uninsured necessary appointments, accidents or surgery;
  • reimbursement for transportation to get to and from school and/or medical appointments;
  • sudden loss of childcare to cover academic schedule period;
  • prescription eyeglasses or essential dental work.

The fund cannot be used to pay tuition or debts to the college.
