Brooklyn, N.Y. - Patricia Farrell, a senior at Brooklyn College, has been awarded a Clark Fellowship for demonstrating a remarkable commitment to community service and maintaining a strong academic average. The Clark Fellows Program, part of Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs graduate program in public policy and administration, carries with it a $30,000 stipend to be applied toward the first two years of graduate school.

Ms. Farrell is enrolled in the CUNY Baccalaureate, a versatile program that enables students to design their own area of study leading to a B.A. or B.S. degree. She is currently using a psychosocial approach in studying the family and the urban multicultural environment with an emphasis on teenage pregnancy and education. She plans to pursue a master's degree in public administration, focusing on nonprofit management.

"I chose Brooklyn College because of its strong liberal arts program," Ms. Farrell commented, "and I have received tremendous support from my professors, who have always encouraged me to go further."

A mother of two, she has served in Project Peace and was awarded a Kauffman Fellowship last semester for her volunteer internship at Inwood House in Manhattan, a maternity residence for teens. Other honors include a 2001 Thomas Smith Academic Fellowship.

"Trish is the kind of student teachers dream of," said Nancy Romer, professor of psychology. "I have no doubt that she will have a major impact on public policy regarding adolescent parenting. We are fortunate to teach her in these formative years."

Brooklyn College, founded in 1930, is one of the eleven senior colleges of the City University of New York. Located on a twenty-six acre tree-lined campus in Flatbush, it enrolls 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students who are representative of the diverse population of Brooklyn and New York City. The college is nationally known for its core curriculum, which has been hailed as one of the "bright spots" in American higher education. Visit the College Web site at: www.brooklyn.cuny.edu.
