Brooklyn, NY -Tania Leon and Noah Creshevsky, professors of music at Brooklyn College, each received the annual American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) Award. The awards are based upon the unique value of each writer's catalog of original compositions as well as recent performances of those works.

"We have a long tradition of composers on our faculty receiving the ASCAP award," said Nancy Hager, director of the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College. "Both Tania and Noah are established, active composers contributing to the vitality of the American music scene."

In 1999, Professor Leon's first opera, Scourge of Hyacinths, was performed at the Grand Theatre de Geneve and at opera houses in France, Germany, and Austria. She was one of the founding members and the first musical director of the Dance Theatre of Harlem. One of fifteen recipients of the 1998 New York State Governor's Arts Award, Professor Leon has won accolades for her compositions from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Chamber Music America, among others.

She received her master's degree from New York University. She resides in Jackson Heights, New York.

Professor Creshevsky, a resident of Manhattan, is a computer music composer whose works are available on compact disc and cassette. He received a master's degree from the Juilliard School and has previously won prizes from ASCAP and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

This special awards program has provided composers withrecognition and money for more than thirty years," said Marilyn Bergman, ASCAP president and chairman.
