SpotlightBrooklyn, NY - Brooklyn College now offers students an interdisciplinary degree program in environmental studies.
The undergraduate program, which is directed by Broeklundian Professor of Physics Micha Tomkiewicz, teaches students to consider social, political, and scientific issues regarding the environment. The liberal arts program covers such topics as nuclear waste management, the use and potential depletion of natural resources, occupational health and safety, and nutrition and world hunger.
In addition to an introductory course in environmental studies, the requirements for the program include courses in biology, chemistry, computer and information science, geology, health and nutrition sciences, mathematics, and physics. Courses in the social and political sciences and the humanities include "Ethics and Society," "Urban Politics and Public Policy," and "Environmental Ideologies and Their Classical Roots." The culmination of the program is a seminar in research methodology that highlights specific case studies and includes presentations by guest speakers, class discussions moderated by instructors, and individual research projects by students.
