Brooklyn College will team up with three Brooklyn public schools to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the birth of George Gershwin, who was born in Brooklyn on September 26, 1898.

The college will host a special concert at Gershwin Theater on Thursday, March 19, at 7 p.m. The event occurs during the "Music in Our Schools Month" celebration, produced in cooperation with the New York City Board of Education.

Music by Gershwin will be performed by the college's Conservatory of Music Jazz Ensemble, led by Professor Paul Shelden; the Dyker Heights Intermediate School 201 Chorus, under the direction of Peter J. Sweeney; the Fort Hamilton High School Symphonic Band, directed by Larry Laurenzano; and the Edward R. Murrow High School Orchestra, under the baton of Joe DeMarco.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for the students and faculty of Brooklyn College to work closely with young musicians in a collaborative effort and celebrate the outstanding music of America's noted composer, George Gershwin," said Professor Nancy Hager, chairperson of the Department of Music and director of the conservatory. Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden will issue a proclamation at the event.

General admission is a $5 donation, and tickets may be purchased in advance from the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College, 718-951-4500. The on-campus theater and box office are located on Campus Road near Avenue H at Flatbush Avenue.
