Fulbright Grant Awarded to Brooklyn College Graduate

Brooklyn, NY - Daisy Rosenblum, a 1999 graduate of Brooklyn College, has received a Fulbright-Garcia Robles grant from the U.S.-Mexico Commission for Educational and Cultural Exchange.

Ms. Rosenblum, who received a bachelor of arts in anthropology, specializing in linguistic anthropology and folklore, will spend one year conducting research on horticultural techniques among the Yucatec Maya of Mexico. She will begin her study in December 1999.

Ms. Rosenblum will study the growing impact of Yucatec women on the household economy and observe Yucatec families and their changing sources of sustenance as a result of growing tourism and evolving gender roles.

She will divide her research between Merida in the Yucatan peninsula near Cancun, and further south in the pueblos surrounding Felipe Carrillo Puerto. During her academic career at Brooklyn College, Ms. Rosenblum was a member of the Ford Colloquium, a program of the Brooklyn College Honors Academy that prepares students for careers as college and university teachers and researchers.

"I'm eternally grateful to the dedicated faculty at Brooklyn College," said Ms. Rosenblum. "I couldn't have made it this far without their constant guidance and encouragement."

Ms. Rosenblum resides in Brooklyn, New York.

The Fulbright-Garcia Robles scholarship, established in 1990, has been awarded to 1,500 Mexican and United States citizens. The award honors two distinguished public figures, U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright, whose vision led to the founding of the Fulbright program in 1946, and former Mexican Ambassador Alfonso Garcia Robles, winner of the Nobel Prize for Peace.

The Brooklyn College Honors Academy, with approximately 400 members, functions as a small liberal arts school within the college. In the academy, outstanding students work closely with faculty mentors to prepare for graduate study.
