Sociologist Robert K. Merton to Lecture at Brooklyn College

       Sociologist Robert K. Merton, renowned for developing the concept of "the self-fulfilling prophecy," will present the Ninth Charles R. Lawrence II Memorial Lecture at Brooklyn College on Tuesday, February 17, at 3 p.m., in the Occidental Lounge of the Student Union Building.

       Dr. Merton, who is professor emeritus at Columbia University, will speak on "De-Gendering 'Man of Science': A Venture in Sociological Semantics," a discussion about the history and emergence of the concept of science. The lecture is free and open to the public.

       He is known for founding the sociology of science and for his theoretical work on the unintended consequences of social action, in particular the concept of "the self-fulfilling prophecy."
