Instead, they were each handed a giant check for thousands of dollars. The money was awarded to them through the Brooklyn College Foundation, Inc., which raises funds to encourage and promote the academic purposes of Brooklyn College and the educational welfare of its students. To be eligible for the scholarships these four received, a student must be either a freshman or sophomore and maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Rose Goldstein Memorial Scholarships
were awarded to:
Rebecca Berrios, freshman from Brooklyn, $12,000;
Avi Z. Rosenberg, sophomore from Brooklyn,
Dean's List student, $8,000; and
Mitchelle Johnson, freshman from Brooklyn,
$8,000.
A Starr International Student Scholarship, intended for an international student who is the first generation in his or her family to attend college, was awarded to Janice Lee, a sophomore, and Dean's List student from Queens, who received $6,000.
The money will be deposited toward future tuition bills at Brooklyn College.
"Through the work of the Foundation, we are offering scholarships that attract the best and brightest of New York's students to Brooklyn College," said President Vernon E. Lattin. "We are creating an endowment that ensures that our talented students will have the same opportunities as our distinguished alumni had."
