Long Beach, Calif. n The Los Angeles-Southern California and San Diego chapters of the Brooklyn College Alumni Association will gather for a welcoming luncheon and reception in honor of the college's new president, Christoph M. Kimmich, and his wife, Flora Graham Kimmich. The event will take place on Sunday, April 9, aboard the Queen Mary, docked at 1126 Queens Highway, Long Beach, California.

As president, Kimmich has pledged bold initiatives for Brooklyn College.

"I want Brooklyn College to become the best liberal arts college in the City University," said Kimmich, "and the best public liberal arts college in the country."

The theme of the new administration, "To be the Best," is articulated in the college's advertising and posters on campus.

Kimmich has spent nearly his entire career at Brooklyn College. He began in 1973 as an associate professor in the Department of History and rose to serve as associate provost and then in 1989 became provost. In 1997, he was called away to preside over the City University of New York as interim chancellor for two years and now returns to the college as its eighth president.

Dr. Kimmich's innovative efforts throughout his career at Brooklyn College and the City University of New York have set the pace for change and renewal.

In 1976 he served as director of the Scholars Program, where he enlisted members of the faculty to teach interdisciplinary seminars and work with students on honors theses. As chairperson of the Department of History from 1980 to 1984, he oversaw the creation of Core Studies 4 and the development of its source reader, The Shaping of the Modern World from the Enlightenment to the Present. The textbook, now in its fifth edition, is used in colleges and universities across the country.
