Brooklyn College Hosts Writing Conference Keynote Address
Given by Pulitzer Prize Winner Frank McCourt

     Brooklyn, NY - The Freshman Year College program of Brooklyn Collegeand the Office of Academic Affairs of CUNY will host a writing conference for college and high school faculty, principals, and administrators throughout Brooklyn on Tuesday, April 20, 1999, from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m.

     The event, Building Bridges: The Transition from High School to College Writing, will offer such workshops as Public Writing and the Position Essay, Close Reading: Using the Dialectical Notebook, andBuilding Blocks for College Success.

     Keynote speaker at the symposium will be Frank McCourt, Pulitzer Prize- winning author of Angela's Ashes. Mr. McCourt, who received a master's degree in English in 1967 from Brooklyn College, will reflecton how his CUNY experience influenced his writing career.

     Other guests are:

     Interim Chancellor Christoph M. Kimmich, of CUNY, who will offer remarks during the opening session. One of Dr. Kimmich's toppriorities is expanding the relationships between college faculty and high school teachers.

     Dean Judith Summerfield, of Queens College, who was named the 1998 New York State Teacher of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

     "Writing well is one of the most critical ingredients for a successful college experience," said Ellen Belton, dean ofundergraduate studies at Brooklyn College. "This conference is the culmination ofthe work we've been doing over the last several months with high schools tohelp students, as well as teachers and guidance counselors, to have a clear picture of what's expected at the college level."

     Functioning as a small college-within-a-college, Freshman Year College provides intense academic and social support for new students through block programming, special registration, and counseling. In addition, Freshman Year College helps students who are learning Englishas a second language to master the writing skills that they will need inorder to perform well on the writing assessment tests.
