It is rare for college athletes to make an immediate impact on a team in their first season on the squad.  Adjusting to a new coach, other personalities on the team and other factors, usually lead to periods of growth and development.  The exceptions that prove this rule can be found in the Brooklyn College Student-Athletes of the Month for September 2008.  In their first month of intercollegiate competition with their squads, Khrystyna Uhlitskykh and Jean Menesky Magloire have excelled, and helped to lead their teams to some early-season success.
A freshman pre-med student, has twice been named CUNYAC Women’s Cross Country Rookie of the Week.  She has finished in the top ten of every competition she has participated in, lowering her average time every week.  Her best overall time in the Five Kilometer event was recorded at the Queensborough Community College Invitational, where she completed the course in 22:41 minutes.
A Bensonhurst resident, Uhlitskykh has been one of the most impressive runners in the conference this season.
“Even though this is her first season on the team, she has been tremendously consistent in practice and in competition,” says head coach Alex Lang.  “She can only improve in the coming weeks and seasons.”
Junior defender Jean Menesky Magloire is in his first season as a member of the Brooklyn College Men’s Soccer Team, but has enjoyed plenty of success as an all-region performer at SUNY Cobleskill.  His energetic and intelligent style of play, coupled with his natural leadership skills, have made him one of the leaders of the squad.  Against then-undefeated York College, Magloire provided a highlight reel caliber play, as he stole an errant pass from a York defender at the top of the penalty box and converted the opportunity into a Brooklyn goal, setting the stage for a 2-0 triumph.
Head coach David McLaughlin calls Magloire, “the driving force of talent and athletic ability for the entire team.”
