With less than a week to go before the cross country championship in the CUNY Athletic Conference, the Brooklyn College men’s and women’s teams are in line to bring the trophies home.
According to Coach Alex Lang, the Bridges, who have run consistently well since the start of the semester, have enough wins to contend for the title in the finals at the Van Cortland Park course in the Bronx, next Sunday, October 26, 2008.
“We have a strong team this year,” says Arvind Badhey, a chemistry sophomore who is completing his BA-MD and also plays in the College’s men’s tennis team. “Last year we finished second in cross country,” recalls the premed student, who was recently named the CUNYAC Athlete of the Month. In addition to his sports triumphs, Badhey is a member of the College’s award-winning debating team.
The College’s women runners insist the men are not alone in their contention for championships.

“We have a very motivated team, too,” says Huan ‘Kayllen’ Zhang during a break in the teams’ 800-yard intervals tests and workout sessions in the race track. A physical education major who will graduate next spring, Zhang is very proud of her teammates who have earned several victories in the course of the season. “I know the men’s team is a favorite to win the championship, but I think we have a chance at taking the title, too,” says a confident Zhang.
On Sunday, the women's team steamrolled the competition for the second straight week at Van Cortlandt Park as they took first place at York College's Second Invitational of 2008. They tallied a score of 57 while second place Staten Island finished with a total of 89.
Meanwhile, the men's team finished in first place for the third consecutive meet as they won the second York College Invitational. They finished with a total of 56 points in the 5K race as they beat out CCNY who finished second with 71 points. Baruch College was third with 86 points among the 10 squads that factored into the team scoring.
