At the Kingsman's Helm

Rimma Kats’ nights can be unpredictable.
There are the evenings she spends working on the newspaper, The Kingsman. As editor-in-chief in chief, she doesn’t get to go to bed until the paper does.

Then there are also the evenings she spends on the red carpets of tinseltown, like when she recently attended the premier of actor Colin Farrell’s new NYPD based movie, Pride and Glory.

Somebody’s gotta take on the tough assignments, which for Kats, also have included interviewing rapper and actress Queen Latifah and other members of the cast of The Secret Lives of Bees, chopping it up with actor and singer Jared Leto and singer Declan Bennett.
“As in every other career, you have to have ambition and determination to do your job in journalism,” says the 21-year-old, explaining how she snagged the coveted interviews. “You just have to keep asking and calling. Sooner or later, because they want press coverage, people will agree to let you in.”
Kats, who was born in Russia and came to the U.S. when she was four, already has a job lined up when she graduates next Spring as a part-time writer for Forbes magazine, which is an impressive feat given the current economy and the cutbacks at many traditional print media outlets. She has also interned at the Time Warner magazine, This Old House.

She says that journalism professors Paul Moses and Anthony Mancini have been pretty tough. But a “tough” that’s helped prepare her for what’s in store. “Both these professors teach you what you need to know to succeed,” she says. “And they don’t give up on you.”

Still, despite all the preparation, holding down the top job at The Kingsman and juggling her coursework at the same time is often a struggle. Some nights at the paper are later than others. There are times, she says, when there isn’t enough copy to fill the paper. “It’s a tough job but it’s worth it and I love it,” she says.
And The Kingsman staff? “They are great writers that can do what anyone in the New York Post or The New York Times can do,” she says.
