CUNY A!ert

November is CUNY Month

Governor David A. Paterson and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg have designated November as CUNY Month 2008, The City University of New York’s annual opportunity to showcase its campuses to the public through a variety of open houses, financial aid workshops and special events at its 23 colleges and institutions throughout the five boroughs.
During the month, the University’s colleges are featuring stellar performances and hundreds of lectures and activities, many of them free. Events range from a seminar on equity markets microstructure at Baruch College to a black solidarity day at New York City College of Technology.
There also will be CUNY Month workshops and seminars where prospective students can hear from financial aid experts and speak with counselors, faculty, alumni and enrolled students in time to register for the 2009 winter session that begins in January.
“CUNY enrollment is at its highest level in over 33 years, and more high academic-achieving students are seeking admission than ever before,” Chancellor Matthew Goldstein said. “CUNY students are winning the most prestigious awards and fellowships in the nation. CUNY’s graduates are tomorrow’s leaders, just as they have been for generations. With the support of alumni, donors and the city and state, CUNY will reach even greater heights. Investing in CUNY is investing in futures. I encourage New Yorkers to visit CUNY colleges during November.”

In his proclamation, Paterson noted the record enrollment for the 2008 fall semester, adding that it coincides with the “more rigorous standards [that] have been implemented

systemwide, leading to greater numbers of better-prepared students in attendance and a student body that continues to reflect New York’s ethnic diversity.”
Bloomberg, calling the CUNY system “one of America’s greatest public universities” offering “the highest-quality college and graduate education available to all New Yorkers,” urged residents to visit CUNY campuses during November. He added that “CUNY graduates are well-educated, motivated and making a mark on the world – and since more than 80 percent of them stay right here in New York, they’re also helping us build a better city.”
