The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball Team (2-1) suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to Oswego State (3-0) in the championship game of the Panther Classic at SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday evening. Junior forward Richard Jean-Baptiste was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
The Bridges shot just 29 percent (10-for-34) - including 1-for-9 from three-point range in the first half, and trailed the Lakers 39-24 at the break. Brooklyn rebounded to shoot 44 percent in the second stanza, but were outdone by Oswego State, who were on fire all night, connecting on 55 percent of their attempts in the second half, and 49 percent overall.
Jean-Baptiste scored 14 points, the third time in as many games that he has been or has tied for the team's leading scorer. He was impressive overall in the tournament, averaging 20.5 points and 10 rebounds per game over the two-game tourney. Ahmad Hemingway netted 13 points, while Daniel Nisbett added 10. Kyle Reuter scored 30 points for the champions, en route to being selected as tournament MVP.
The Bridges next play on Tuesday evening, when they travel to Polytechnic University for a non-conference affair. The game will follow the Brooklyn-Polytechnic women's game, and is scheduled for an 8:00 pm start.
Women's Basketball Team Drops Game in Ramapo Tip-Off Chamionship
The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team dropped a 56-47 decision to Ramapo College (2-2) in the championship game of the 2008 Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament. Juniors Priscilla Ramirez and Eja Wong were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Ramirez scored eight straight points for Brooklyn at the start of the game as the Bridges enjoyed an early 8-3 lead. A Stepahnie Cannizaro jumper then keyed an 11-2 Roadrunners rally that put the host team ahead 14-10 midway through the initial stanza. After another bucket by Ramirez cut the gap to two points the Brooklyn offense stagnated, missing 11 coinsecutive field goal attempts and committing seven turnovers. Ramapo scored the final 14 points of the period to take a 16 point lead at halftime.
Brooklyn next plays on Tuesday November 25th, traveling to borough rival Polytechnic University. The game will be the first half of a doubleheader and is scheduled to start at 6:00 pm.
