A pair of basketball standouts has been named Brooklyn College Student Athletes of the Month for January 2008.  Jaclyn Cavalcante and Daniel Nisbett have each made positive contributions to the basketball programs at Brooklyn College.
Over eight contests in the month of January, Cavalcante led the Bridges with 13.6 points per game, while dishing out 3.0 assists per night.  The senior point guard and team captain has also played inspired defense, collecting 24 steals in January alone.  In a CUNYAC victory over the New York City College of Technology on January 3, Cavalcante scored 20 points helping BC score a season-high 87 points.  She followed up by dropping a personal season-high 25 points against Hunter on January 5.  Later in the month, she led all scorers with 24 points against York College.
The James Madison High School graduate, who boasted a 3.55 GPA last semester, is a Physical Education major and will be graduating in the spring.  Cavalcante was able to return to her alma mater in the fall to complete her student teaching requirements, further proving that her focus and determination extend beyond the boundaries of the court.  Her head coach, Alex Lang says, “Jaclyn has been an excellent player for four years.  I have had the pleasure of being her coach throughout her outstanding collegiate career.”
Nisbett has also been a vital cog in the stellar men’s basketball team this season.  Already sporting 15 wins, the team has its sights firmly set upon the CUNYAC title.  During the month of January, Nisbett has averaged 20.3 points per game for a Bridges team that has been the conference’s most prolific scoring unit.  Seven times this month, Nisbett has topped the 20-point plateau, including 32 points in a win at Medgar Evers College on January 23.  He has been on fire from long distance of late, draining 18 of his last 34 three-pointers (52.9 percent).
His stellar play has been recognized by the basketball community this month, as Nisbett was named to the Presto Sports / Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Weekly Honor Roll for the week of January 21. Coach Steve Podias notes that Nisbett “can score in so many different ways, but what really is impressive is how dynamic he can be on the defensive end of the floor.”  A graduate of Michael J. Petrides High School on Staten Island, Nisbett is a sophomore Business Management major.
