Hernán R. Sierra
“Oh, you were trying to interview me?” chuckles Hernán R. Sierra. “I have to admit it. You’re right, I was ducking you.”
Sierra, a shy, good-natured, hard-working young man, has the ability to laugh at himself. A graduate of Brooklyn College, Class of 2003, with a B.S. in mathematics and a minor in economics, he is a SEEK alumnus. While at school, Sierra was a member of the Chi Alpha Epsilon (XAE) Honor Society (Alpha Nu Chapter) and the Golden Key International Honour Society, and a recipient of the Iris and Bonifacio Alvarez Scholarship—quite a long list of accomplishments.
After graduation Sierra stuck with the College. “Over the years I kind of began to really like the place,” he says. “So I thought I’d see what was available in careers.”
He held a couple of temporary positions in the library and the Center for Student Disability Services before landing in the Office of Admissions, as an office assistant in the Admissions Information Center (AIC) in James Hall. “It was kind of a serendipity,” he says. “It’s always busy around here. Right now, we’re finishing up spring ’08. At the same time we’re in the middle of signing up fall ’09. It never stops.”
Born and bred in Brooklyn, he grew up with two brothers. He describes his greatest character trait as dedication. “I like to finish what I start,” he says.
“Hernán has been exceptional in solving the myriad of problems that arise concerning the admissions process of new and returning students,” says coworker Lorraine Greenfield. “Each time I encounter a problem that needs immediate attention, I call Hernán, and he responds quickly and efficiently to help resolve it. He is a valuable asset and role model for Brooklyn College.”
