New Provost:
Professor William Tramontano
Brooklyn College President Christoph Kimmich announced the appointment of William A. Tramontano, a distinguished educator and researcher in the biological sciences, as the new Provost, the College’s chief academic officer. His appointment will be effective in July, 2008.
Dr. Tramontano comes to Brooklyn College from Lehman College where he served as the Acting Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs during the 2006-2007 academic year, while also serving as the Dean of Natural and Social Sciences and Professor of Biological Sciences. Under his leadership, Lehman College initiated three new academic programs — the Master of Social Work, Master of Public Health, and the Bachelor of Business Administration. He was also instrumental in the planning of a new science facility at Lehman.
“Dr. Tramontano brings a wealth of administrative experience, in public as well as private institutions, and a record of accomplishment in academic affairs – programmatic and curriculum development, strategic planning, and successful faculty hiring. He is a strong advocate for teaching and research, and his commitment to students and student learning is consonant with our goals and values,” said President Kimmich.
“I believe he will serve the College well as chief academic officer, and will embrace change without neglecting tradition, while building on our momentum to take us into the future. It is my belief that, in the midst of CUNY’s Decade of Science, Dr. Tramontano will propel Brooklyn College forward in all academic areas, with a renewed commitment to the sciences.”
A Brooklyn native, Dr. Tramontano served as Program Director for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Biological Services Grant, as Chair of the Biology Department at Manhattan College/College of Mount Saint Vincent, as Program Director of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Biological Sciences Grant, and has been has been teaching Biology at the rank of full Professor since 1991.

Dr. Tramontano holds a B.S. in Biology from Manhattan College, an M.S. in Biology from New York University, and a Ph.D. from New York University with a major in Physiology and a minor in Cell Biology. In 2002, he received the Distinguished LaSallian Educator Award from Manhattan College. Dr. Tramontano is currently serving The City University of New York on the Research Deans Committee and the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation in Science (NSF). He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Sigma Xi Honor Society, Botanical Society of America, Council for Undergraduate Research, and National Associations for the Advisors for the Health Professions.
