Annsonia Garrick
A native of Trinidad who has lived in Brooklyn since 1998, Annsonia Garrick received an enthusiastic nomination from many of the students and practically every faculty and staff member of the Speech Communication Arts and Sciences Department, where she works as the secretary.
“I don’t know how I did that,” says Garrick. “Maybe it’s just because I get along with everyone. I guess I have a high degree of tolerance, I treat everyone the same.”
Garrick, who is currently pursuing a graduate degree, worked for a bank before enrolling to be a business, management, and finance student at Brooklyn College in September 1999. “I had to adapt,” she says with a smile. “My first encounter as a student was when I walked into the classroom and said, ‘Good afternoon.’ Nobody answered. It was a bit of a culture shock.”
Garrick started working in the Speech Communication Arts and Sciences Department that December, and has held onto her job even though she received her bachelor’s degree five years ago. “It’s a very busy department and a very popular major,” she says of her work environment. “Besides working with the faculty, I also advise students regarding our department requirements. Our majors are committed to high academic standards.”
Garrick’s work is of exceptionally high quality, says Assistant Vice-President for Human Resource Services Michael Hewitt, who is also an adjunct faculty member of Speech Communication Arts and Sciences. In his nomination, Hewitt writes, “Ms. Garrick demonstrates an enormous dedication to students, a dedication that exemplifies the College’s strategic plan goal to be student-centered and, as such, merits the special recognition that comes with being named Employee of the Month.”
