Brooklyn College Celebrates CUNY Disability Awareness Month;
"We're All in this Together"

Brooklyn College celebrates Disability Awareness Month with a series of events and performances, culminating in an Open House at the Center for Student Disability Services. This month-long focus on disability issues is designed to raise the awareness of the campus community regarding issues of importance to individuals with disabilities.

April 1–30: The Brooklyn College Library has prepared an exhibit of books by writers with disabilities. The display contains the author's literary work and a description of the author's disability. The exhibit is located on the table outside the Woody Tanger Auditorium on the first floor of the library. Please visit the library to learn more about the wonderful books that have been written by famous authors with disabilities.

April 1: Physically Challenged Obstacle Course sponsored by the Office of Recreation, Intramurals, and Intercollegiate Athletics as part of the annual BC Olympics. Open to students, faculty, and staff. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., 200 Roosevelt Extension . All participants must have with them a validated BC ID card. Participants should sign up in Room 125 Roosevelt prior to the event.

April 13: My Left Foot, a film based on Christy Brown's autobiographical novel. The film tells the story of how his life was affected by cerebral palsy and how those around him reacted to his disability. Amazingly, he teaches himself to draw and write using his foot, which is the only part of him that he can control. Daniel Day-Lewis and Brenda Fricker won Oscars for their performances in this film. 1:30-3:30 p.m., Woody Tanger Auditorium, Brooklyn College Library.

April 19: People Like Us, a theatrical performance by Plays for Living that explores the challenging and highly charged issues that confront today's student body. Covers such topics as disability, culture, race, and religion. 12:00-2:00 p.m., Jefferson Williams Lounge, Student Center.

April 20: Workshops sponsored by the Magner Center for Career Development and Internships for students with disabilities seeking employment/internships. 1:30-2:15 p.m. Resume Writing and 2:30-3:30 p.m. Dress for Success. Both workshops will be held in 1309 James Hall.

April 20: The Center for Teaching will hold a seminar for faculty on the diversity of learning styles. The topics will include: how the brain processes information, learning disabilities, and Learning Styles Inventory. The seminar will be held from 1:30-3:30 p.m., for further details, contact the Director of the Center for Teaching: poconnor@brooklyn.cuny.edu.

April 26-30: The Division of Student Life, as part of Volunteer Week, will conduct a campaign to raise awareness about issues of importance to students with disabilities. Flyers will be handed out at key campus locations to call attention to these issues. Please take and read the flyers.

April 27: Children of a Lesser God, is a love story about a speech teacher at a school for deaf children who falls for a beautiful but distant deaf woman who works as a janitor at the school. Starring Academy Award winners William Hurt and Marlee Matlin. Ms. Matlin won an Oscar for her performance in this film. 1:30-3:30 p.m., Woody Tanger Auditorium, Brooklyn College Library.

April 27: The Special Education Graduate Student Organization will have a meeting concerning issues of importance to people with disabilities. A short film will be shown. The meeting will be held from 3:30-5:00 p.m., for further detail, contact Professor Yoon-Joo Lee at yjlee@brooklyn.cuny.edu.

April 29: Our month-long celebration will culminate in an Open House in the recently renovated Center for Student Disability Services. In addition to offering services for students, the Center is also a resource for faculty. All are invited to drop by to learn more about the Center and enjoy light refreshments. 1:30-3:00 p.m., 138 Roosevelt Hall.
