Brooklyn College Honors Alumnus Myron Kandel at the Annual Best of Brooklyn Awards Gala, May 13
Brooklyn College will honor Myron Kandel, '52, financial editor of CNN, at the annual Best of Brooklyn Dinner and Awards Gala, to be held on May 13 at the Regent Wall Street. Kandel will be celebrated by scores of leaders in finance and media, including Max Frankel, who will serve as master of ceremonies, and dinner committee co-chairs Murray Koppelman, '57, and Muriel Siebert. Proceeds from the evening will benefit the Brooklyn College Presidential Scholarships, a program that provides full-tuition, four-year awards to entering freshmen who have shown superior academic achievement. "Mike exemplifies the extraordinary achievements of Brooklyn College alumni, and we are proud to honor him as the Best of Brooklyn," said Christoph M. Kimmich, president of the College. "For Mike, Brooklyn College was a stepping-stone into a world of accomplishment, and so it remains for our students today. It is fitting that this event, celebrating a great Brooklyn College alumnus, will help another generation of outstanding students to reach their goals." In addition to Murray Koppelman, '57, president of Eastlake Securities; Muriel Siebert, president and Chairwoman of Muriel Siebert & Co.; and Max Frankel, former executive editor of the New York Times; the dinner committee includes: Roy Furman, '60, vice-chairman of Jefferies & Co.; Dick Grasso, chairman of the New York Stock Exchange; Paul Kolton, former Chairman, American Stock Exchange; Arthur Levitt, former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission; Marjorie Magner, '69, chief operating officer of the Global Consumer Group, Citibank; Martin D. Sass, '63, chairman and chief executive officer of M.D. Sass & Associates; Carl Spielvogel, former United States ambassador to Slovakia; and Paul Steiger, managing editor of the Wall Street Journal. "I am honored to be named the Best of Brooklyn, and I am grateful to my friends and colleagues for coming out to support Brooklyn College's Presidential Scholarship program," said Kandel. "I owe much of my success to the education I received at Brooklyn College, where I first developed my love of journalism. I am proud to be part of an event that celebrates my alma mater and the talented young students on its campus today." Myron "Mike" Kandel began his career in journalism as sports editor of Brooklyn College's student newspaper, Vanguard, and in his senior year, worked full time as a New York Times correspondent and copy boy. He continued at the Times while earning a master's degree in journalism, rising to the position of financial reporter. Kandel has since served as business or financial editor of the Washington Star, the New York Herald Tribune and the New York Post, as well as the editor and president of the New York Law Journal. He has founded and published several financial newsletters; coauthored the Greer/Kandel Report, a syndicated financial column; and written How to Cash in on the Coming Stock Market Boom (1982), which accurately forecast the bull market that began later that year. In 1979, he helped found Cable News Network, where he was instrumental in developing CNN Business News. Today, Kandel continues to serve as financial editor and anchor at CNN, where he just renewed a contract that will take him to 2005, when he will turn 75.
