Bedford Avenue Overpass Removal

Built in 1973 as part of the Plaza Building, the Bedford Avenue Overpass will soon be history.

The following is a tentative schedule for the beginning phase of the Bedford Avenue Overpass removal, which is the first step in the five-year construction plan for the West Quad Building.

Every effort will be made to schedule noisy activities generated by demolition and construction equipment at times that will not disturb school and community activities. The overpass demolition, for example, which requires the use of compressors and air-driven hammers, will take place this summer.

•Bedford Avenue traffic will be restricted to one lane beginning July 7. A traffic official will guide vehicles in each direction.

•The entrance to Plaza Building will be temporarily closed beginning July 9 or 10 to prepare the bridge for demolition. During this brief period, Plaza Building and James Hall should be entered through Roosevelt Hall. When the work is completed, access to these buildings will return to normal.

Deconstruction of the concrete overpass should take approximately one month.

•Partial demolition of the Bedford Avenue Overpass will begin on or about July 11.

•Removal of the overpass steel beams will result in weekend detours of traffic on Bedford Avenue between July 25 and August 10.

• Ground-level entrances to Roosevelt Hall will continue to be open full time during construction.

•The security booth entrance on the east side of Bedford Avenue will be moved closer to Boylan Hall.

•Demolition of the staircase leading to the Upper Quad will begin on or about the second week of August and end approximately at the end of the month.
