Adult Degree Programs
SMALL
COLLEGE PROGRAM
The Small College Program is a full-time or part-time structured evening program
in which adults may earn a B.A. or B.S. degree. The program offers a planned
course of study required of all students pursuing a degree. It also schedules
courses for students majoring in economics; accounting; business, management,
and finance; elementary education, English, sociology, psychology, political
science, mathematics, health and nutrition science, and philosophy (option II).
Students who have a specific question regarding these majors are encouraged
to contact the appropriate department. Students may also select any other major
offered by the college, provided that the major is available in the evening
or on the weekend.
Admission is based on an application, testing, and a personal essay. Consideration
is given to a student's potential and motivation as well as prior education.
Students with or without previous college experience may apply. Transfer credit
may be available. Courses are listed in this Bulletin. The program office is
in 1411 Boylan Hall (telephone: 951-5525).
SPECIAL
BACCALAUREATE DEGREE PROGRAM FOR ADULTS
The oldest and most selective study option for adults is the Special Baccalaureate
Program, which gives academically strong adults the opportunity to obtain core
requirements through interdisciplinary seminars that meet two evenings weekly.
Students move together as a group for three years. Fellow classmates provide
a supportive atmosphere and often bonds are formed that can last throughout
the college years and after graduation.
Each year one or two instructors teach the interdisciplinary seminars. After
the first year, students will begin adding courses in their major. Special Baccalaureate
students can major in one of twelve subjects, including business, finance, and
management, computer and information science or education. Those who can take
some classes during the day may choose any major offered at the College. Special
Baccalaureate students may earn up to 32 credits for academically relevant life
experience. The typical Special Baccalaureate student earns between 3 and 20
credits.
To be eligible for the Special Baccalaureate Program students must take a test
and earn a score that indicates they have a high level of reading comprehension
and vocabulary skills. Successful candidates for this program typically have
little or no academic credits in the Brooklyn College Core subjects (i.e., the
humanities, communications, social sciences and physical sciences). Further
they must demonstrate a willingness to study full time at an accelerated pace
in concert with others in an honors seminar format.
CUNY
BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM FOR ADULTS
CUNY BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM Established in 1971, the CUNY Baccalaureate Program
(CUNY BA/BS Program) is a small, University-wide individualized degree program
for self-directed, academically strong students who have well-formulated academic
and career goals. Students work out an individualized area of specialization
(similar to a major) with guidance from a CUNY faculty member who serves as
a mentor. Students also complete the Program's 13-course liberal arts distribution
and other degree requirements. They are able to incorporate independent studies,
internships, and credit by examination into their degrees, and may be able to
earn up to 15 credits for documenting learning experiences that occurred prior
to entering college. Although students in the Program are matriculated at one
CUNY college, they may take courses at other CUNY colleges including The CUNY
Graduate Center.
To be eligible to apply, students must have a clear academic goal and must have
completed at least 15 college credits with a grade point average of 2.50 or
higher. The CUNY BA and BS degrees are fully accredited and are awarded by The
City University rather than by an individual college. The Program operates under
the auspices of The CUNY Graduate Center. Applications and further information
may be obtained from the CUNY Baccalaureate Program Office at 365 Fifth Avenue,
Suite 6412, New York, New York 10016 (212-817-8220). The Program's website is
