ENGL 3153 American Literature, 1900-1945
4 hours; 4 credits
Literary experimentation and innovation in early twentieth-century U.S. society. A range of arts (novel, poetry, manifesto, film, photography), movements (the avant-gardes, feminism, the Harlem Renaissance, the 1930s Cultural Front), and contexts (immigration, WWI, Jim Crow and white supremacy, the Great Migration, the Great Depression). Writers may include Gertrude Stein, Nella Larsen, Jean Toomer, William Faulkner, T.S. Eliot, Muriel Rukeyser, Richard Wright, Sui Sin Far, H.T. Tsiang, Meridel Le Sueur, and others.
Prerequisite: ENGL 1010; or corequisite ENGL. 1012.
