Struggles for autonomy and independence under Spain and U.S. Critical perspectives on national identity formation, race, gender, labor, and land distribution. CÚdula de Gracias. Lares Rebellion of 1868. Politics and repression. National consciousness. U.S. occupation and colonial issues. Industrialization, urbanization, and dilemmas of political status. Contemporary issues of socio-economic development and migratory crisis. Dynamics of (im)migration.

Prerequisite: English 1010 or permission of the chairperson.
