El Grito de Lares and Betances' leadership. Women's contributions. Electoral politics. The Nationalist Party and Albizu Campos' political philosophy. Ideological currents of the independence movement. Issues of race, class, gender, and religion. Impact of McCarthyism and the 1959 Cuban Revolution on island politics. Radical barrio politics in United States - Puerto Rican communities.
Prerequisite: Puerto Rican and Latino Studies 1001 or 3310 or departmental permission.
