Indigenous inhabitants before the European invasion; Dutch and English imperial periods; the American Revolution; slavery; immigration and ethnicity; growth, development, and infrastructure; reform, social uplift, and social conflict; urban crisis and urban renewal; public life, culture, and innovation; race and gentrification.
