First-Year Learning Communities
FIRST-YEAR LEARNING COMMUNITIES: GATEWAY TO STUDENT SUCCESS
Goals for Student Success
Students in first-year Learning Communities will:
- Learn about the many College resources for first-year students
- Strengthen their ability to think critically and creatively
- Strengthen their ability to express their thoughts orally and in writing
- Learn to integrate and synthesize learning across the boundaries of individual courses
- Develop a sense of community and appreciate individual and social diversity
Learning Communities for First-Year Students make selecting a schedule easy!
First-Year Learning Communities for entering students and second-semester students are made up of courses that are requirements for completing a degree: a section of English composition and at least one course in Brooklyn College's nationally acclaimed Core Curriculum. Students in Learning Communities also choose electives in their areas of interest. Learning Community classes are taught by outstanding faculty who are committed to the philosophy of the First-Year Experience and to helping first-year students succeed.
Learning Communities will help you learn more and learn faster!
Many Learning Community instructors work together in planning their courses. For example, your English composition teacher and your instructor in Core 2.3 (People, Power, and Politics) may coordinate your reading and writing assignments. Your instructor in Core 3.32 (Geology: The Science of Our World) and your instructor in Core 2.1 (Knowledge, Reality and Values) may coordinate the discussion of environmental and ethical issues. Learning Communities will give you a strong foundation for your future studies at Brooklyn College.
Trained peer tutors provide support for Learning Community students. These are more experienced students, who already know the ropes. They can help you find your way around the college, help you understand your assignments, and help you become more confident in your success as a student.
Learning Communities will help you meet new friends and form study and support groups!
Learning Communities schedule the same group of students for the same sections of required classes. You will find yourself a member of a true community of learners, with an instant support system. You'll have fellow students to turn to for help-and you'll help them too! You'll have people to study with, have lunch with, and talk and laugh with.
Some of the people you meet in the first weeks of classes will be your friends throughout your years at Brooklyn College. Some of them may be your friends for life!
