Brooklyn College Enters New Phase of Middle States Re-accreditation
12/2/2007Brooklyn College has entered the second year in the three-year-long Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) process of re-accreditation that will enable us to continue as a peer-recognized, degree-granting institution of higher learning.
At the Stated Meeting of the Faculty on February 20, 2007, President Christoph M. Kimmich reported that “we must do a self study, examining the ways in which the College has changed since the last re-accreditation in 1999 and determining how we move ahead…We want our self study to be broadly representative, and we want the Middle States Association to hear from the entire college community, not just from the president and the deans…We fully expect to be reaccredited, but we must take the process seriously. It requires diligence and attention to detail.”
Under the direction of Acting Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Nancy M. Hager, a College-wide Steering Committee and seven Working Groups consisting of approximately 150 faculty, staff, students, and administrators are currently at work on the Self-Study Report. Next fall, when the committees have completed their work, a draft Self-Study Report will be circulated to the college community for comment as a means of shaping the final report that will be submitted to the Middle States Visiting Team prior to their on-campus review in spring 2009.
To facilitate communication about the Self-Study Report and the visit of the Middle States team, the Steering Committee has
- Launched a Brooklyn College Self-Study web site which can be located at http://www.brooklyn.cuny.edu/pub/middle_states.htm.
- Professors Lynda Day and Bonnie L. Gustav, Steering Committee C0-chairs, will make themselves available for informal chats about the re-accreditation effort in the Georgian Room on Thursdays in October and November from 12 noon until 1:30 PM.
- Comments and suggestions from the college community will be welcomed by Professor Lynda Day, Steering Committee Co-chair, via email to ProvostOffice@brooklyn.cuny.edu.
