Men’s Basketball Team Honored at Borough Hall

The Brooklyn College Men’s Basketball team, the CUNYAC champions, were honored by Borough President Marty Markowitz, ’70, for a successful season in which the team not only won the University-wide basketball tournament for the first time in thirty-five years, but also made it to the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s tournament for the first time in twenty-seven years.
"Everyone knows Brooklyn College excels in academics, but now we can also say they excel in basketball too," said Markowitz, who shook each player’s hand as he awarded them certificates.
Markowitz promised, at the team’s urging, to attend a game next season. "When the Brooklyn Dodgers left, there went my interest in sports," he said. But with a winning team at the College, and the anticipated arrival of the National Basketball Association’s Nets, Markowitz said he was bound to become an enthusiastic supporter of Brooklyn’s basketball teams.
He paused to pose for a picture, wondering where to stand. "I don’t want to block any of the players," he said to laughter from the team.
