"Internet Guardian" Lawrence H. Landweber (’63) to Deliver BC Commencement Address

Distinguished Alumni Honors to be presented to Don Buchwald ('59), Arne L. Kalleberg, ('71), Nancy A. Lynch ('68)


Brooklyn College President Christoph M. Kimmich announced today that mathematician and computer scientist Lawrence H. Landweber (BrooklyPresident Kimmich Commencement Processionn College Class of 1963) will deliver the commencement address on Thursday, May 28th.  The commencement exercise for 3,332 graduates will be held on the Campus Quadrangle at 2900 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn. This spring, Brooklyn College will confer 2,602 bachelor’s degrees and 730 master’s degrees.

President Kimmich also announced that in recognition of Mr. Landweber’s commanding achievements in the development of the Internet and his dedication to global outreach, Brooklyn College will present him with an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.

“Each year Brooklyn College produces highly skilled, civic-minded students who make significant contributions to New York City and the world,” President Kimmich said.  “Our strong community of students, professors and alumni continue to make a positive and lasting contribution to important local and global initiatives in a wide range of disciplines.  As I graduate one last class here at Brooklyn College, I am honored to be among the City’s finest educators and students and am humbled by the generosity of so many alumni who give back year after year to our grateful community.”

This year, Brooklyn College will present honorary degrees, Doctor of Humane Letters, to three extraordinary individuals who have had a significant impact on our local and global communities. In addition to Landweber, honorands include Douglas C. Steiner, president of Steiner Equities Group, for his far-reaching belief in creative talent, in general, and in Brooklyn, in particular; for his support of an industry that has brought great economic and civic gain to the borough; and for a lifetime devoted to building world-class structures across the country and Alexander (Sandy) Howe, a senior designer at the Boston architectural firm of Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott, for his internationally recognized achievements in academic architecture and for his beautiful, valuable, and greatly loved new Brooklyn College Library.

Distinguished Alumni honors will be presented to Don Buchwald (’59) for his long and principled career as a talent agent, his enduring belief in artistic potential, and his steadfast loyalty to and support of his alma mater; Arne L. Kalleberg (’71) for his important contributions to sociology and to our understanding of work and its impact on society; and Nancy A. Lynch (’68) for her broad knowledge and creative insights, and for the impact she has had on the lives and careers of her colleagues and students in the fields of theoretical mathematics and computer science.   

The Presidential Medals will be awarded to Howard “Woody” Tanger for his innovative, highly successful career in radio broadcasting, his unwavering commitment to classical music, and his bountiful philanthropy and Barry R. Feirstein (’74) for his achievements during his exceptionally productive career in finance, and for his deep commitment to Brooklyn College and his leadership and financial support.
 
The ceremony will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m., rain or shine.
