Prexy's Ready to Pass Torch at His Beloved B'klyn College

Christoph KimmichCHRISTOPH KIMMICH already knows what he'll miss when he leaves the Brooklyn College president's office in August.

“You don't miss things; you miss people,” he said. “I’ll miss the students. I'll miss the people I work with.”

A noted historian who taught at Columbia University for 10 years before joining the Brooklyn College faculty 36 years ago,  Kimmich, 70, was appointed acting chancellor for the entire 23-campus City University of New York system in 1997.

But two years later, he returned to run Brooklyn College, drawn back by the same things that brought him there in 1973: the students, the faculty and the college's pivotal role in the borough's continuing history.

“When I came back, I told everyone, ‘We can transform this institution—not just for its own sake, but for Brooklyn as a whole,’” Kimmich said.

He noted that nearly 88% of the college’s students come from Brooklyn.
