Noted for its internationally recognized faculty and accomplishments, the Department of Art was founded by artists escaping German fascism on the eve of World War II. In addition to offering the world?s first comprehensive Bauhaus program in a liberal arts setting, it has grown to include abstract expressionists, realists, and abstractionists drawn from the New York art world as well as eminent artists and art historians. The department also includes study in digital art, which offers a solid integration between the traditional and media-driven art and combines digital technology with studio practice and art history. The department brings the knowledge, talent, creative work, research, and professional activities of the faculty into the classroom and the studio. Art students are thus offered the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills, and intellectual self-confidence so valuable to using visual form expressively and interpreting images accurately.
